Updated: Jul 3, 2019

Thank you to VELA Youth Fund for their commitment to assisting African American students academically.

On June 15, 2019, the VELA Youth Fund presented scholarships to UCR's STEM and New Horizons summer programs to 10 youth participants of the Building Resilience in African American Families programs. The scholarships were presented at the 12th Annual Juneteenth in the Coachella Valley event held at the Indio Performing Arts Center.

Vela made these awards on behalf of Jon and Becky Lindbeck, Roberta Mitchell, and Norman Woods Scholarships. Stem Scholarship awardees were Devon Sauders-Fugate, Devin Williams, Seniyah Towner, and Trinice Miller. JaQuain Conner, Kaleb Black, Naim Muhammad, Kiara Parks, Christinie Spears, and Kiana Temple were recipients of the New Horizons Scholarship.

Sandra Mitchell of Vela wrote: On June 21, 2019, following the workshop, awardees demonstrated their experiences and what they learned at a UCR STEM Discovery Showcase which we were glad to attend. The students all did a wonderful job showcasing what they had learned. We applaud them, and their hard work in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math.
